A multi-ribbed V-belt is an element that transfers drive between the crankshaft pulley and components such as the alternator or pumps, including air conditioning or power steering pumps. Unlike standard V-belts, with wedges arranged transversely, the multi-ribbed belt has longitudinal cuts. This design translates into a more stable fit on the pulleys, higher flexibility, and the ability to transfer drive on both the notched and flat sides. The belt's constant operation, enabling the drive of many components, translates into its wear. Incorrectly seated or damaged pulleys shorten the belt's service life. Factors such as dirt, moisture, and contamination with grease or engine oil also increase belt wear. The need for belt replacement may be indicated by metallic noises, increasing with engine load. Squeaks may also be audible. The condition of the belt can be assessed visually. If its surface is visibly damaged, it is worth replacing immediately. A broken belt cuts off the drive to many important vehicle components, without which further driving may be impossible.
